Clean up Your Resume’ on a Regular Basis

Your resume’ is your one chance to tell a potential employer about your past work experience. It’s used to display your schooling, any extra education, and what you have learned on your journey of employment. However, it shouldn’t read like a requiem for your past.

Certainly highlight the work experience from the past years. However, there comes a certain point where some jobs need to be left out, unless they were highly formative. If you were at a menial job that did nothing but put a paycheck in your hand, leave it out. The only time to leave it in is when it leaves a gap in the timeline. Then make a short notation of the job title and duties. Don’t dwell on it.

If a job goes back to your teenage years, or early college years, and it’s been at least 15 years since the job was performed, consider leaving it off. The potential exists that it will detract from the overall goal of the resume’, which is to highlight experience. An employer is more interested in your recent knowledge, and your college degree helps furnish your education. However, if you have been at a job for a steady period of time, put in earlier work experience to keep the resume’ looking full. Two jobs over a long period of time doesn’t do much to fill up a sheet.

It was a noble intention — a resume was began, filled with precious information; facts were chronicled carefully, stuffed with powerful words and promises. A new career was desired, and this was to be the paper that would earn it for you.

That… hasn’t happened.

Your resume instead has summoned only apathy. Employers seem unimpressed by the knowledge sprawled across the page. They offer no compliments; they give no smiles. Instead they merely seem underwhelmed by what’s presented, expressions turning blank before they even finish your cover letter.

The reason for this is simple: vital details are being lost in a wealth of unnecessary content.

A resume is not meant to be a celebration of your life. It’s instead to be a — brief — explanation of your skills. Information must be tailored to the position, with only relevant data used. A quick glance should reveal why you are perfect for a job, rather than listing what makes you the ideal candidate for other fields. All facts must be prioritized, describing only what can be applied to the career you’re trying to gain. Any elements that offer nothing beyond a stroke to your ego should be removed.

Spelling does count!

Written communication in the 21st century has evolved from writing by hand and typing on paper to texting, posting, blogging and Tweeting. Digital constraints oblige us to abbreviate and use shortcuts like never before. With so much of our communication done in such an informal way, many of us have gotten used to seeing (and using) odd spellings and acronyms when we text or post.

But there are still certain instances when spelling and grammar do count! Any communication connected with your job, for example, deserves your highest attention to detail.

Your writing is a reflection of yourself. Would you show up to your job with only one shoe, your pants unzipped and your hair a mess? Probably not. Now ask yourself WHY not? Because it would form a bad impression on your coworkers and customers, right? It’s the same with your words.

If you can’t take the time to spell out “Thanks” instead of “thx,” you give the impression that your reader isn’t important enough for you to bother writing three whole letters. And though you might not capitalize words or bother with punctuation on your phone, it’s important that your writing on the job is readable and understandable. After all, one little comma makes all the difference between “Let’s eat, Grandma!” and “Let’s eat Grandma!”

English has plenty of confusing constructions that can stymie the best of us. If you’ve never really learned when to use “their,” “there” and “they’re,” or the difference between “its” and “it’s,” there are a few simple rules you can Google that will help you out.
